Re-imagined 'Jesus Christ Superstar' playing at Fisher

The re-imagined 50th anniversary tour of Jesus Christ Superstar is now playing at Detroit's Fisher Theatre through Sunday, March 5th.

The 2017 Olivier award-winning production explores the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas.

The iconic musical features lyrics and music from Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber including legendary tracks "I Don't Know How to Love Him," "Gethsemane" and "Superstar."

The current Detroit run offers a postmodern take on the long-running rock opera that allows for striking costumes and props that pop against the simple staging and provide a concert-like atmosphere.

The 95-minute production could benefit from a intermission with some moments losing their momentum, but the passion and clear enjoyment from the performers helps keep the musical plugging along to its emotional finish.

Jack Hopewell handles the lead Jesus role with ease and Elvie Ellis as Judas is the heart of the show while Faith Jones beautiful voice shines as Mary Magdalene.

Tickets start at $41 and can be purchased online at broadwayindetroit.com, in person at the Fisher Theatre Box Office or by calling 800-982-2787.
